Programme
Smetana: Vltava, (The Moldau), from Ma Vlast.
Wieniawski: Violin Concerto no.2.
Dvořák: Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’.
Conductor: Maria Barbosa Aristizabel
Soloist: Bradley Creswick
Orchestra North East welcome Bradley Creswick once again as their soloist in the Concerto. Bradley needs no introduction to North East audiences, and Orchestra North East know the sparkling and virtuosic piece by Wieniawski is one of his personal favourites, adding a most enjoyable element to this Central-European themed concert.
Smetana and Dvořák are of course the two most eminent Czech composers and the works Orchestra North East have chosen are probably their most famous. The tone poem Vltava is a beautifully crafted picture in music of a great river and whilst the subtitle of Dvořák’s symphony may suggest something different, it is widely acknowledged that the music, like much of what he wrote, was nonetheless rooted in the music of his homeland.
The conductor for the afternoon will be Maria Barbosa Aristizabel, a very talented young conductor from Colombia. Maria stepped in, at very short notice, to conduct the Orchestra at a rehearsal in preparation for their concert in September 2024, and Orchestra North East are very pleased that she is able to return to work with them.
