In a new commission, writer Jake Morris-Campbell explores how a beguiling watercourse near Bishop Auckland – the River Gaunless, a tributary of the River Wear, known in Old Norse as ‘useless,’ – is being saved and enhanced for the community today. Jake will be joined by Kirstie Hutchinson from Wears Rivers Trust and Zoe Frogbrook, Head of Environment at Northumbrian Water, to talk about his experiences discovering this ancient river.
Jake Morris-Campbell was born in South Shields. A BBC New Generation Thinker, he regularly appears on Radio 3. His non-fiction book Between the Salt and the Ash: A Journey into the soul of Northumbria, which explores the identity of the North East in the wake of Christianity and coal, was published in 2025.
