Presented in partnership with Collected Books and Gala Durham
Join us for an evening of conversation with Ann Cleeves, author of 37 critically acclaimed novels, international bestseller, and recipient of the Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger, as she publishes the eleventh novel in her Vera Stanhope series – The Dark Wives.
A LOCAL MYTH. A DEADLY THREAT.
The man’s body is found in the early morning light by a local dog walker on the common outside Rosebank, a care home for troubled teens. The victim is a staff member who was due to work the previous night but never showed up. DCI Vera Stanhope is called to investigate. Her only clue is the disappearance of one of the home’s residents. Vera can’t bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can’t dismiss the possibility. Vera and team are soon embroiled in the case, and when a second connected body is found near the Three Dark Wives standing stones in the wilds of the Northumbrian countryside, superstition and folklore begin to collide with fact, and the dark secrets in this community may be far more dangerous than Vera could ever have believed possible.
As well as selling in huge numbers in the UK and internationally, translated into over 20 languages worldwide, Ann’s books featuring detectives Vera Stanhope, Jimmy Perez, and Matthew Venn have been adapted for television as ITV’s Vera, BBC One’s Shetland, and ITV’s The Long Call respectively. In 2022, Ann was awarded an OBE for services to reading and libraries.
At this event, Ann will be talking about her Vera Stanhope books, especially The Dark Wives, which are set in Northumberland, where Ann also lives. Ann will be in conversation with Helen Pepper, Senior Lecturer in Policing at Teesside University and forensics advisor for ITV’s Vera series.
Event chaired by Claire Malcolm, CEO of New Writing North.
