Schools

Young people perform as part of a dance workshop.

We are committed to engaging children and young people with our work. To this end, we work with local schools, colleges and universities to deliver exciting and innovative tours, workshops and projects to open up the world of theatre, both at our venue and yours.

There are a number of ways you and your students can get involved.

CPD

We pride ourselves in bringing in free and affordable CPD options for Teachers.

For more information about these sessions and to secure your place please email us education@galadurham.co.uk

Tech and behind-the-scenes tours

Our new Tech Tour can be booked as either an add on to show tickets or a standalone.

In addition to the tour, we can also offer a bespoke package with options including a lighting and/or sound workshop.

We can also tailor a package around careers in theatre. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

Seeing a show?

Are you planning a visit to the theatre and need some extra support? Perhaps you’d like to enrich your experience with a post-show discussion with the cast or meet some of our Gala Durham team? Get in touch and we’ll help make your great visit exceptional.

Show specific workshops

We work with a wide range of practitioners and incoming companies to offer workshops that are show specific either in our theatres or we can come to your school or venue at a mutually convenient time.

Teacher Advisory Group

Are you a teacher who is interested in theatre education? Would you like to help a shape a vibrant offer across the Durham County Council theatres? Would you like the chance to meet up with likeminded teachers?

We are keen to hear from you as we look to develop our learning offer for schools. We have set up a teacher advisory group which meets termly to share ideas for schools and learning, discuss what might work and what you’d like to see. We will also endeavour to make sure you are the first to know what is on offer as well as giving you tea, coffee and cake!

If you’d like to attend, please email education@galadurham.co.uk.

What teachers have said

“It was engaging as students were encouraged to take part in all activities, performances, and step-by-step instructions. Students enjoyed the process of moving to the music. The group leader was very proficient in their field, and was able to share insight into the professional world which students thought was great.” Rebecca Bell, St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form, Bishop Auckland

“The knowledge of the staff about the production and friendliness of the staff were some of the main strengths that I believe made our young people enjoy the Tour as much as they did. I wouldn’t change the tour one bit our young people loved it and have had a lot of positive comments about the tour.” Wesley Delap, Integrating Children

“The pupils have previously struggled with creativity so this was really impactful in the session. Mixing together meant friends were separated in a good way allowing them to work with different people, they learnt part of the show so could identify with it when they saw it after” Steph Matthews, Polka School of Dance

What young people have said

“I really enjoyed the workshop. It was a style of performance I have never done before and would like to explore it more in the future.” Attendee of Donuts dance workshop

“Both the film and the activities were amazing. I never did stop motion before then and I really enjoyed it. The film was fun and entertaining and yeah it was good” Attendee of a special FLUX screening for Pride

“It was great fun meeting the cast and learning part of the show, then going to see it on stage afterwards” Attendee of a Ballet Cymru workshop

“I had the best time of my life” Attendee of a tech tour during Peter Pan & Wendy
