A Gala Durham Production
By Ed Waugh
It’s 1917, and the war is in full swing.
With over a million men enlisted to fight, women step-up to the tough jobs in the munitions factories of the North East. Encouraged to play football to boost morale, women’s teams are formed, and rivalries develop.
While this is clearly not appropriate behaviour for the fairer sex…the plucky lasses of Algernon Patterson’s Armaments factory become the team to beat.
From the factory floor to the country’s best pitches, women’s football becomes the biggest sport the country has seen, with crowds of 50,000 cheering them on. That is…until the men return.
Based on real events, this is the funny and inspiring tale of how women with hearts of lionesses overcame prejudice to play the beautiful game.
